Diversity makes for richer collaboration. Unilin’s Finance Team in Ireland brings together 10 women and 9 men, representing 5 countries as well as different generations and backgrounds. Denys and Barbara share how these differences make their team stronger. “There is plenty of laughter here, but above all, hard work.”
For Denys it’s simple: “We differ in almost everything: age, gender, temperament, hobbies, nationality and professional background, and yet we make a great team.” When he moved to Ireland three and a half years ago, that diversity helped him settle in more quickly. “My colleagues gave me loads of valuable advice about life in my new country. In all that time, I haven’t experienced a single conflict. Everyone is ready to help each other, both on and off the job.” Barbara also enjoys this cultural diversity in her everyday work environment: “It’s great that colleagues sometimes bring dishes from their home country to the workplace. Delicious!” The result? A team that, according to Denys, can handle any challenge, simply by drawing on everyone’s unique experience and approach.
For Barbara, the diversity of the Finance Team was one of the main reasons to join Unilin in the first place.
“I worked in the same Irish family business for 17 years and wanted to work for an international company with larger and more diverse teams. That appealed to me and I felt welcome from day one, even though the team members had already been working together for a long time. More than half have been here for over 5 years. Age isn’t an issue either: our oldest colleague is 65 and the youngest is 24.”
Despite their many differences, there is one clear common thread and that is their passion for numbers. For both Barbara and Denys, those differences are their team’s biggest strength: “The more diverse your team, the more perspectives you’re introduced to. I find it hugely enriching to approach a problem in different ways. That’s exactly what makes us stronger.” Another shared value is respect. “We have a lot of discussions here but always in a respectful way.”
A strong and diverse team is forged, it doesn’t happen by chance. Unilin plays an active part in this process. Barbara: “Our manager believes it’s important to invest in our team culture and you can clearly feel that. As a team, we also meet up regularly after work. That makes all the difference because you get to know your colleagues in different way. As a result, we not only work better together but we also have a lot of fun.”
This approach pays off. Retention in the team is high and new colleagues feel at home in no time. Their close bond doesn’t go unnoticed either, other departments within Unilin see them as a shining example of strong collaboration. Over time, the Finance Team has built a reputation as a close-knit group where everyone is on the same page. Barbara: “We see each other as teammates, we don’t notice our differences. In fact, it’s those differences that bring us closer together.”
