Fire safety in the workplace

1. What is zero-harm?

It’s the umbrella term for everything we do around safety. Zero-harm is embedded in our way of working. It’s something we try to improve every single day. We create a safe working environment, provide guidance and training for our employees and also work on a shift in mindset: safety always comes first. This has resulted in the number of incidents at our company declining for five consecutive years, an achievement we are all proud of.

2. Why the focus on fire safety this year?

A fire, no matter how small, can have a huge impact on our people and our operations. In a large company like ours, with so many sites, small fires do occasionally occur. In addition, a fire can double in size in just thirty seconds and that is why the first few seconds are crucial in determining how a fire develops. This is one of the key messages we are sharing with the employees at all our sites this year.

3. How do our employees contribute to this safety culture, including fire safety?

We all contribute to creating a safe working environment and making sure we don’t create any hazardous situations. At Unilin, we emphasise everyone’s duty to also point out potentially unsafe behaviour to each other. This year, we are coaching everyone on how to spot hazardous situations, as well as what to do if a fire breaks out. The most common issues are overheating equipment, overloaded sockets, clutter or dust near ignition sources,… Simple actions such as keeping the workplace clean, disposing of hazardous waste correctly and keeping sprinklers clear are practical forms of fire prevention.
